What is Jet lag ?

Jet lag is a feeling of irritability, insomnia, indigestion and general disorientation. It occurs when the body’s inner clock is out of synchronization with time cues it receives from the environment. The time you wake up, when you eat, and when you bed down for the night are all determined by this internal clock.

Jet lag can make you tired and forgetful. It throws off your sleep schedule, so you may have trouble falling asleep or wake up too early. In some cases, people who have jet lag feel irritable, lose their appetites, or even have digestive problems such as heartburn or indigestion.

Jet Lag Symptoms

The feelings of disorientation encountered as a result of crossing time zones are known as jet lag. Common symptoms of Jet lag include

  • Fatigue and general tiredness.
  • Inability to sleep at night
  • Loss of concentration
  • Headaches and general malaise.

Jet-lag occurs when biological rhythms are disrupted as a result of rapid transitions across multiple time-zones. Such de synchronization of rhythms also occurs in nocturnal shift work employees who transfer to night shifts.

Jet Lag Causes

The main but not the only cause of jet lag is crossing time zones. Usually going east is worse than going west. Children under three don’t seem to suffer jet lag badly as they are more adaptive and less set in their ways. Adults who adjust readily to changes of routine also seem less susceptible to jet lag. Those who are slaves to a fixed daily routine are often the worst sufferers.

Jet lag is actually caused by disruption of your “body clock” – a small cluster of brain cells that controls the timing of biological functions (circadian rhythms), including when you eat and sleep. The body clock is designed for a regular rhythm of daylight and darkness, so that it is thrown out of “sync” when it experiences daylight and darkness at the “wrong” times in a new time zone. The symptoms of Jet lag often persist for days while the internal body clock slowly adjusts to the new time zone.

  2. Plan time to unwind. Sleep experts recommend timing your travel so that you arrive at your destination fairly early in the evening. This will give you time to have a good dinner and to unwind before going to bed. Try to make yourself go to bed at the new time.

Acute incontinence is most often caused by an infection. Persistent incontinence develops over time and tends to last longer. Stress incontinence is the most common bladder control problem. This is leakage that occurs when a person coughs, sneezes, laughs, lifts a heavy object, or otherwise increases pressure in the lower abdomen. The bladder is rarely completely emptied. Dribbling is more common than complete evacuation of the bladder. This problem is a result of weakened pelvic muscles, which can be due to aging, obesity, and/ or pregnancy.

Urge incontinence is the result of an overactive bladder. The detrusor muscle, which surrounds the bladder, may in­voluntary contract and begin the flow of urine. Frequent urination is common with this type of incontinence, as is nocturnal urination, especially in men. Difficulty urinating may also be due to prostate inflammation. Possible under­lying causes of urge incontinence include a history of pelvic inflammatory disease, abdominal surgery, stimulants such alcohol and coffee, and bladder infection. It may also be due to prostate problems.

Functional incontinence is characterized by an uncontrollable urge to empty the bladder before you can reach the bathroom. It can be caused by stress; changes in environment, such as having to stay in the hospital and not being able to get to the bathroom in time; and mobility restrictions. Some individuals are not aware when their bladders are full, and this loss of sensation can lead to urine leakage. This is reflex incontinence, and it is most often due to spinal cord injury or other neurological impairment.

Total incontinence is the unpredictable loss of urine at all times. It can be caused by neurological dysfunction, abdominal surgery, spinal cord injury, or an anatomical defect.

Incontinence is most common in people over fifty, but loss of bladder control can occur at any age, especially in pregnant women. It is wrong to assume that loss of bladder control is an inevitable part of getting older. It is also wrong to assume that nothing can be done about this problem.

What is impotence?

Impotence, or chronic erectile disfunction (ED), is no longer a taboo subject. It is estimated that 30 million American suffer from ED and, for a great majority of them, the problem is solvable. A man is considered impotent if he does not have the ability to achieve or maintain an erection adequate for normal sexual intercourse. Erections result from a complex combination of brain stimuli, blood vessel and nerve function, and hormonal actions. Hormonal imbalances such as low levels of thryoid hormone may also contribute to the problem. Low levels of the hormone testosterone are rarely the cause of ED. Testosterone is responsible for the process of desire, not for ED-but of course, lack of desire may be the problem. If desire is not there in the first place, it is difficult to either get or maintain an erection. Loss of libido (sexual desire) may be caused by depression, illness, or medications, and of course, a waning attraction to one’s partner.

ED may be chronic or recurring, or it may occur as a single isolated incident. One or two occurrences, however, are rarely thought of as impotence, although they may be up­setting at the time. Most of the men who have this problem are age forty or over (one in three men over sixty is affected), but those under forty may also have the problem.

In the past, it was assumed that impotence was primarily a psychological problem, but many therapists and physicians today believe that as many as 85 percent of all cases of impotence have some physical basis. What is Hydrocele?

Hydrocele repair involves surgical correction of a birth defect in which there is an open passageway between the abdomen and the scrotum. This causes fluid collection around the testicle called a hydrocele.

Hydrocele is a common cause of swollen testicles in newborns and the elderly, although men can develop hydrocele at any age. Hydrocele is a common condition of men in which there is accumulation of fluid in the tunica vaginalis, the sac which surrounds the testicle. It may occur at any age, but old men are usually more prone to the condition. The testicles are the major sex glands in the male. Each gland is composed of myriads of coiled tubes in which the sperm cells are produced. It is the function of these cells to fertilize the ovum during sexual intercourse.

Hydrocele swelling is usually painless. If the testicles appear to be chronically swollen, medical interventions are available. Surgery can cure hydrocele, or the fluid may be drawn out of the testicular membrane using a fine needle (fine needle aspiration is quite painful, so some men prefer surgical options).

Hydrocele Symptoms

The main symptom of hydrocele is painless, smooth and elastic enlargement of the scrotum. In some cases swelling is so much as to cause a great deal of inconvenience interfering greatly with walking. Consequently it may produce a great deal of pressure upon the testicles and the spermatic vessels causing a detrimental effect upon the generative system. The hydrocele is translucent. If a bright light is placed upon it in the dark the whole swelling lights up. If the swellings become painful, it usually denotes that it has become infected

Hydrocele Causes

The apparent cause of hydrocele may be a knock or a strain but toxic condition of the system is usually at the root of the matter. This systemic toxicity results from wrong dietary habits, general wrong living and suppressive medical treatment of former diseases. Sexual excess and abuse is also an important factor in some cases, through the degeneration of the sex organism which follows. Sometimes gonorrhoel infection, obstruction of the abdominal vein, tuberculosis and dropsy may be the cause of this condition.

Hydrocele sometimes exists at birth. In this case swelling is seen when the infant is in an upright position and disappears when the infant is laid upon its back. Hydrocele usually disappears by itself in infants.

Treatment for Hydrocele

Tapping is the method usually resorted to for removal of the fluid in hydrocele. This however, does not remove the cause of the trouble, but only its effects. The correct way in which the condition can be really dealt with successfully is through constitutional treatment. Such a treatment should aim at removing the underlying toxicity of the system which is at the root of the trouble.

The sufferer from hydrocele should begin with an exclusive fresh fruit diet for seven to ten days. In this regimen he should have three meals a day of fresh juicy fruits such as apples, pears, grapes, grapefruit, oranges, pineapple, peaches, melon or any other juicy fruit in season, but no bananas or dried stewed or tinned fruit and no other foodstuff whatever. For drinks lemon water unsweetened or water either hot or cold may be taken.

During this period the bowels should be cleansed daily with a warm water enema. If constipation is habitual. all steps should be taken for its eradication. After an all-fruit diet. the patient may adopt the following regimen:

  • Breakfast: Fresh fruit as obtainable, or grated raw carrot or other raw salad-stuff, prunes or other dried fruits, if desired, and a cup of milk.
  • Lunch: Steamed vegetables, as obtainable, with either a poached or scrambled egg or a vegetarian savoury. Stewed fruit or a baked apple may be taken for dessert.
  • Dinner: A good sized raw salad, of any suitable vegetables as obtainable; with whole wheat bread and butter, and prunes or other dried fruit as dessert.

Further short periods ,on the all fruit diet should be under taken at monthly intervals as required, for two or three consecutive days each time. The diet factor is of the utmost importance and fruits and salads must form the main basis of the future dietary. Alcohol, strong tea, or coffee condiments, pickles and sauces should be avoided. Smoking, where habitual, should be given up.

Water Treatment for Hydrocele

Treatment through water is extremely beneficial in curing hydrocele. Cold hip baths twice daily in the morning and the evening, for 10 minutes each time, are specially valuable. For a cold hip bath, an ordinary bath tub may be used. It should be filled with cold water. The patient should sit in the tub, keeping the legs outside.

A hot Epsom salts bath is also very useful in the treatment of hydrocele and should be taken once or twice weekly, where possible.

Every effort should be made to build up the general health level to the highest degree. Fresh air and outdoor exercise are essential to the success of this treatment. Sun and air bathing, where possible, should be undertaken. All habits, and practices tending to lower the tone of the body should be studiously avoided; strain should be avoided as far as possible. The wearing of a suspensory bandage is often useful.

Unless the condition persists for a long time, the foregoing treatment should soon begin to show its beneficial effects, and the whole general health level of the sufferer will be greatly enhanced at the same time.

Testicular Cancer

Swollen testicles and scrotum are sometimes a symptom of testicular cancer. However, it should be noted that a swollen scrotum is more likely to result from other disorders than cancer. Testicular cancer symptoms may also include pain, hard lumps on the testicles, or even lower back pain.

What is Hiatus Hernia ?

Hiatus Hernia can be defined as displacement of a portion of the stomach through the opening in the diaphragm through which the oesophagus passes from the chest to the abdominal cavity.

In Hiatus Hernia disease a normal oesophagus, in its long, narrow descent from the mouth to the stomach, must pass through a taut sheet of muscle: the diaphragm, which may be thought of as both the floor of the chest and the ceiling of the abdominal cavity. To get to the ‘stomach, the oesophagus pokes through a teardrop-shaped opening in the diaphragm called the hiatus. It’s at this point that the oesophagus and stomach join, and where a valve system (the lower oesophageal sphincter) keeps deposited food (and the acid working to digest it) from backing up into the oesophagus.

In a hiatus hernia, the upper part. of the stomach has slid up past the diaphragmatic hiatus (weakened, perhaps, by age) and into the chest. From 75 to 95 per cent of hiatus hernias are of this ‘sliding’ type. These come and go, sliding back and forth, depending on body position and other factors.

Hiatus hernia occurs at the oesophageal opening. The disease is common after middle age. It is estimated that about half the people above 60 years of age suffer from it, although most of them may not have any symptoms. The correct diagnosis of hiatus hernia can be arrived at by means of berium meal x-ray test.

What are the types of hiatus hernia ?

There are 2 main types of hiatus hernia.

  1. Sliding hiatus hernia :- It occur when the junction of the oesophagus and stomach, and part of the stomach protrude into the chest, when swallowing.
  2. Rolling hiatus hernia :- This is sometimes called a para-oesophageal hiatus hernia by doctors. In this case, part of the stomach bulges into the chest out of the weakest part of the diaphragm, which is the oesophageal opening. The junction of the oesophagus and stomach stays down within the abdomen, and the top part of the stomach (the fundus) bulges up into the chest cavity. This type of hernia normally remains in one place, sitting next to the oesophagus, and does not move in or out when you swallow.

Hiatus Hernia Symptoms

Hiatus Hernia is characterised by pain in certain areas. The most common areas are behind the breast bone at the nipple level and lower, at the end of the breast one. Pain may also occur on the left chest and this is often mistaken for angina. Other symptom of Hiatus Hernia are heartburn, especially after a meal, a feeling of fullness and bloatedness, flatulence and discomfort on swallowing.

Hiatus Hernia Causes

Hiatus hernias can occur when there is weakening of the muscle tissue around the gap where the oesophagus passes through the diaphragm or where this gap is otherwise stretched. A number of factors appear to contribute to hiatus hernias developing including:

  • Hereditary factors
  • Obesity
  • Pregnancy
  • Sudden, hard physical exertion, such as lifting
  • A birth defect
  • Trauma or surgery to the abdominal area.

What is hepatitis?

Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver, usually caused by a viral infection. The liver is responsible for filtering out from the bloodstream harmful substance such as dead cells, toxins, fats, an overabundance of hormones and a yellowish substance called billirubin that is a byproduct of the breakdown of old red blood cells. If liver is inflamed, tender, and enlarged, it becomes unable to function normally. As a result, toxins that would normally be filtered out by the liver build up in the body, and certain nutrients are not processed and stored as they should be.

Hepatitis Symptoms

The symptoms of hepatitis include fever, weakness, nausea, vomiting, headache, appetite loss, muscle aches, joint pains, drowsiness, dark urine, light-colored stools, abdominal discomfort, and often, jaundice (yellowing of the skin due to an accumulation of bilirubin) and elevated liver enzymes in the blood. Flu like symptoms may be mild or severe.

Types of hepatitis

There are different types of hepatitis, classified according to the virus that causes the condition. Scientists have identified the viruses responsible for three leading types of the disease, called hepatitis A, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C. There are also other, less common types known as hepatitis D, hepatitis E, and hepatitis G. All are contagious to some extent.

Hepatitis A, also known as infectious hepatitis, is easily spread through person-to-person contact, fecal contamination of food or water, and raw shellfish taken from polluted water. It is contagious between two to three weeks before, and one week after, jaundice appears.

Hepatitis B, also referred to as serum hepatitis, is spread through contact with infected blood (for example, from mother to child at birth or through the use of contaminated syringes, needles, and transfused blood) from adults to children living together in close contact, through sexual activity, and through blood transfusions. Most people-75 percent-recover from hepatitis B, although 25 percent go on to develop cirrhosis or cancer of the liver.

Hepatitis C, the most serious form of hepatitis, accounts for 8,000 to 10,000 deaths a year in America. It is estimated that 4 million Americans are infected with the hepatitis C virus (HCV) and this disease is the primary reason for liver transplants in this country. Hepatitis C is four times more prevalent than AIDS and twenty times easier to catch. About 85 percent of infections lead to chronic liver disease. The virus causes slowly progressing but ultimately devastating damage to the liver. In addition, people with HCV often have elevated levels of iron in the liver. This also can cause liver damage. Tests can detect HCV antibodies in donated blood, but an infected individual may take up to six months to develop the antibodies, so it is still impossible to identify all infected blood. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) maintains that only 7 percent of current hepatitis C cases were acquired as a result of blood transfusions, and that the risk of contacting the virus from a unit of blood is about 1 in 100,000. The incidence of hepatitis C infection from blood transfusions or the use of blood products has decreased since 1992, when screening was introduced, but there is always a risk-and the lack of testing before 1992 has left a huge legacy of HVC-infected people. The most common means of HCV transmission after blood transfusions before 1992 are sharing needles, intravenous drug use, and sexual contact. HCV can also be transmitted from mother to child during childbirth.

Hepatitis D, or delta hepatitis, occurs in some people already infected with hepatitis B. It is the least common of all the hepatitis viruses, but the most serious because there are two types of hepatitis working together. It can be transmitted through sexual contact or from mother to child at birth.

Hepatitis E is rare in the United States, but more common in other parts of the world, notably Mexico, India, and Asian and African countries. It is usually spread through fecal contamination and appears to be dangerous for pregnant women, but generally does not lead to chronic hepatitis in others.

It is also possible to develop hepatitis as a result of exposure to certain toxins or alcohol or drug use, including the overuse of over-the-counter medications such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen. This is called toxic hepatitis. Environmental toxins absorbed through the skin can also damage the liver. Chlorinated hydrocarbons and arsenic are examples of severe hepatotoxic agents. In toxic hepatitis, the amount of exposure to the toxin determines the extent of liver damage.

This disease affected many famous men in history, including Alexander the Great, Luther, Newton, Milton, Dr. Johnson, Franklin and Louis XIV. Gout is very common in New Zealand and it is particularly common in Maoris and Pacific Islanders. Some surveys have shown it to be present in up to 10% of adult males.

Gout Symptoms

An attack of gout is usually accompanied by acute pain in the big toe, which becomes tender, hot and swollen in a few hours. Usually, it is almost impossible to put any weight on the affected foot during the acute stage of the disease. It may also similarly affect other joints such as the knees and the wrists, and sometimes more than one joint may be affected at a time. The attack usually occurs at midnight or in the early hours of the morning, when the patient is suddenly awakened. The acute attack generally lasts for a week or so. During this period the patient may run a slight fever, and feel disinclined to eat. His general health generally remains unaffected.

The attack may occur again after several weeks or months. The interval becomes shorter if the disease is not treated properly. The joint generally becomes damaged by arthritis. This is chronic gout, in which chalky lumps of uric acid crystals remain in the joint and also form under the skin.

Another serious complication of gout is kidney stones containing uric acid, causing severe colic pains in the stomach. In some cases the kidneys become damaged and do not function properly. This is a serious condition as the poisonous waste products which are normally removed by the kidneys accumulate in the blood. Gout usually develops in the joint of the first toe. Common signs and symptoms include the following :-

Gout Causes

The chief cause of gout is the formation of uric acid crystals in the joints, skin and kidneys. Uric acid is an end product of the body’s chemical processes. Those affected by gout have a higher level of uric acid than the normal, due either to the formation of increased or reduced amounts of acid being passed out by the kidneys in the urine. This uric acid usually remains dissolved in the blood. But when the blood becomes too full of it, the uric acid forms needle shaped crystals in the joints which bring about attacks of gout.

Heredity is an important factor in causing this disease and certain races are prone to gout. Other causes include excessive intake of alcoholic drinks, regular eating of foods rich in protein and carbohydrate and lack of proper exercise. Stress is also regarded as an important cause of gout. During the alarm reaction, millions of body cells are destroyed and large quantities of uric acid freed from these cells enter the tissues after being neutralized by sodium.
