Cymbalta Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a common chronic condition. There is widespread musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, and multiple tender points -- tenderness in precise localized areas, particularly in the neck, spine, shoulders, and hips. People with fibromyalgia may also experience sleep disturbances, morning stiffness, IBS (irritable bowel syndrome), anxiety, and other symptoms. Women far more often have fibromyalgia than men.

Cymbalta (duloxetine) is a drug that has been approved by the FDA to treat major depression and also to treat the pain of diabetic peripheral neuropathy (nerve damage in the hands and feet). Cymbalta targets two chemical messengers in the body, serotonin and norepinephrine, believed to play a role in both depression and pain perception.

The symptoms of fibromyalgia can overlap with autoimmune diseases and other musculoskeletal conditions making it difficult to diagnose. The defining symptoms of fibromyalgia are often associated with other subjective and objective symptoms which occur in combination. It is estimated that fibromyalgia affects about 2 percent of the U.S. population.
