Juicing to Help Treat Diabetes

If you suffer from diabetes mellitus it means that your body is unable to properly process glucose, the sugar that is used for energy. When this is not process it remains in the blood and increases the blood glucose levels, which can be treated through juicing.

Juices Beneficial to Treating Diabetes

There are many types of fruits and vegetable juices which are beneficial to our health:

Brussels sprouts and string beans are a great source of insulin and can benefit people with diabetes especially well. Silicon is also a great help to the pancreas and this can be found in vegetables such as olives, mustard greens, radishes, cabbages and cucumbers.

Be careful when using fruit juices as they have naturally high sugar content. You should dilute any of the sweeter juices such as carrot, beet, grape, pear or apple with water before drinking.

Bitter Melon juice is said to contain three different compounds that are known to naturally lower the blood sugar level in our bodies and it is recommended to take 2 ounces of this juice per day in order to help treat diabetes mellitus (according to the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians).

Interactions with Certain Drugs

Bitter melon juice and grapefruit juice are known to interact badly with some prescription medications and you should always consult a doctor before using them for juicing.

Medical Precautions

  • Check with a doctor before using mangosteen juice. Especially if you have any pregnancy complications such as gestational diabetes or problems with blood pressure.
  • Take your juices with food
  • Children under 6 years old should be limited to only 4-6 ounces of juice per day.
  • Always check with a doctor before taking bitter melon juice. Especially if you are pregnant, nursing, small children and women with menstrual flow.
  • Diabetics should be careful of taking too much juice with high sugar content such as carrots and fruit juices.
  • Tomato and citrus fruits can have an upsetting effect on the body’s PH balance due to their high acidity.

Side Effects

  • The American Foundation of Traditional Chinese Medicine states that too much bitter melon juice can cause diarrhea and mild abdominal pain.
  • Mangosteen juice can raise blood sugar levels at first, even small amounts, and this is more commonly seen in people who are of Asian descent who are not obese.

Preliminary trials have shown that Aloe Vera juice (containing 80% aloe gel) can help our bodies to lower blood sugar levels if we have Type 2 diabetes.
