Home Remedies for Cleaning Mold

Mold is a substance that usually thrives in a damp, airtight location. If it is not quickly wiped out it can spread very fast.

To make matters worse, the spores from the mold can contaminate the air very quickly. This results in a very serious health risk to users and this is a very important reason to clean and disinfect your home.

It is highly recommended that you ventilate the mold area you plan to clean for several hours before you attempt to clean the location. You should also wear a facemask and wear latex gloves during the process.

Just beware that certain species of mold can be highly dangerous. That is why you should follow steps to kill it before you wipe it away. This is further explained below.

Simple Mold Killing Steps

  1. Killing mold is not an easy task. However, it can be accomplished using a choice of one of these different home solutions:

Tea tree oil and water-One teaspoon of tea tree oil per cup of water is all you need.

Grapefruit seed extract and water-All you need is 10 drops of the oil mixed in with 1 cup of water.

Pure white vinegar-Generous amount sprayed onto the mold surface.

  1. Fill whatever solution you would like to use in a spray bottle and make sure you shake it well.
  2. Leave the homemade solution of your choice set for several hours before you clean it.

Simple Cleaning Steps

After you have let one of the solutions above sit on the mold for several hours you should then prepare for the next step of mold removal. This time, you are attempting to clean and disinfect the area using these steps:

  1. Mold-covered hard surfaces can be cleaned by using an ammonia-free detergent and hot water. A scrub brush should also be used.
  2. After the first cleaning step mentioned above is completed you should then sand the area down.
  3. The upholstered areas should be cleaned with a steam cleaner and detergent.
  4. The mold from your clothing and linens should be cleaned as well. Just add ¾ to 1 cup of water to a washing machine load.

Disinfectant Steps

  1. Hard surfaces should be sprayed with a bleach and water solution. If you are cleaning porous surfaces a commercial fungicide should be used.
  2. Leave this fungicide mixture sit for 15 minutes.
  3. When done with this fungus-killing stage rinse off the area with fresh water.

Prevention Steps

Of course, it is highly paramount that you do whatever you can in your power to prevent mold from returning. The steps you see below will help you.

  1. You can keep mold from returning by repairing any plumbing or roof leaks.
  2. Ventilating the area well with fans and dehumidifier will help immensely.
  3. Bathrooms is one place where vents are recommended, because this is one moist, enclosed area where these substances grow.
