Home Remedy For Cleaning Brass Plated Hardware

Brass-plated hardware is often hard to keep shiny and clean. However, maintaining them is not an entirely impossible feat.

You can get this job done using any standards commercial cleaner. However, these sometimes can be very costly and dangerous at times and therefore a home remedy is recommended.

Simple Instructions

Making your own brass cleaner is quite simple. It just requires a few common household ingredients mixed together just right.

Please read to learn more about making your own home remedy to clean off doorknobs, dresser and sink fixtures, and more. Just follow the instructions you see below.

  1. Pour 1 tsp. salt and ½ cup white vinegar in a bowl. Then, slowly pour in one spoonful of flour at a time and stir it all at the same time until it becomes a fairly thick paste.
  2. Use a clean washcloth or towel to gather up a moderate-sized amount of this paste. Rub a thin, even coat of it over the brass-plated hardware.
  3. Once you have applied the cleaning paste you created over each piece of brass let it sit for about 10 minutes. Then wipe it with a damp cloth, and then dry it with a clean, dry towel.

An Alternative Solution

Believe it or not onions can make a good brass polish. Just chop some up and put them in a pan of water and bring the water to a boil. Then, let this mixture simmer for two hours.

Then, strain the water. It is this water that you would use to help give your home brass pieces and fixtures a complete shine.

Afterwards, you might want to wipe the brass dry. This will add to its ability to produce a shine like no other.

Further tips on cleaning brass might also help you. Further explanation of these is shown below to you.

Additional Comments

When choosing the cloths to use for this project it is best to find ones that will not leave behind any fiber or lint. You might also be able to use some softer grades of lint-free paper towel.

In any case, you might want to test the solution you have created in a hidden, unnoticeable area. This will ensure that you are not scratching door or dress knobs or any sink faucet handles.

If you see signs of scratching or discolorations in the testing are you might not want to use it. Different thicknesses and grades of brass may react differently to this solution. Therefore, use it carefully and test it if you feel the need.

Other tips to keep in mind include the following:

  • Never leave your solution sit on the brass for too long (no longer than the recommended 10 minutes).
  • Always wipe the brass dry afterwards or the residue will become noticeable.
  • You might want to use a bit of olive oil or lemon juice to polish your brass.
  • Any time you polish your brass with home ingredients wipe it as dry as possible to prevent spotting.
