Home Remedies for Window Cleaning

If you clean your windows on a regular basis it will prevent dirt from building up in the future. It is highly recommended that you use a mild home cleanser made for this purpose and it also is advised that you do this about once a week.

Although mild home cleansers might be a bit less concentrated and may require more elbow grease to apply, they really can work. It therefore helps keep the air quality in and around your home free from toxic chemicals and you can complete this job for much less expensive of a price.

Practical Solutions

You often are presented with a variety of solutions when trying out various home remedies. The one you use might depend on the severity and types of stains you need to clean.

Using newspaper-Newspaper is often recommended for cleaning windows. There may be concern that the ink on the paper would transfer to the windows. However, this is not the case.

The main reason the newspaper is recommended is because it is one of the most lint-free types of substances there is to use. A close second would be using the unbleached paper towel you might see (the tougher grades).

Wipe with microfiber clothes-This wiping solution works very well. It often is recommended because it does not leave behind any lint or scratches. Another advantage of this type of cloth is the fact that it can be washed and reused many times. A soft cotton cloth might be a close second.

Lemon juice-Lemon juice is often used and it has acidic qualities similar to that of vinegar. 3 tbsp. of lemon juice should be added into a spray bottle and this bottle should be filled with water.

Then the mixture should be sprayed directly onto your windows. Immediately afterwards it should then be wiped down to dry.

This lemon juice cleans as well as degreased the windows. However, it can also deodorize a room.

Cornstarch and ammonia-This is a rather old home remedy that still is used for window cleaning today. 2 tbsp. of cornstarch and ½ cup ammonia as well as ½ cup white vinegar should be mixed in a spray bottle. Shake it well and then spray onto whatever surface you want to clean.

Rubbing alcohol-This is a disinfectant that can be used at full strength on your windows. In other words, there is no need to dilute it. It never leaves any residue or streaks and it is easy to spray from a bottle. It should be applied directly to a cloth and used to wipe the window clean.

Additional Advice

You can even take a clean, dry cloth and plain water if you do not have any of the ingredients above in your home. Sometimes just a few drops of mild dish soap, water, and a squeegee might also help.

In any case, you should wipe your windows dry immediately after cleaning and rinsing. Also, any home remedy you choose to use is far less expensive than any combination of commercial products, and of course they are less toxic.
