How To Clean A Brass Plated Lamp?

Brass, an alloy of 60-80% of and 20-40% of zinc is most widely used material for lamp holders and external electrical fittings. This is due to the fact that apart from being greatly malleable (beaten into sheets) and ductile (ability to be drawn into wires), brass is also quite hard, lustrous and easily cast. A unique golden red glaze makes brass one of the most attractive materials and its property of resistance towards rust and discoloration makes it perfect for both in-house and out-house fittings. However, to maintain their shine for a longer period of time, adequate cleaning measures is needed. For this, you require a few special cleaning agents. Very alkaline cleaners may form a coating over the brass, while strongly acidic cleaners may remove a layer of the alloy from the article. Thus, it is preferable to use mild acidic cleaning equipment that washes away the dirt from brass, restoring its former shine.

Things you will need:

  1. A mixing bowl
  2. Lemon juice in diluted form or vinegar (since both are mild acids)
  3. Flour
  4. Table salt
  5. 2-3 cotton cloths for cleaning

Instructions:

  1. Remove the brass lamp from the plug. If there is a light bulb attached to the brass lamp, remove it too or else it might get damaged due to water and acid solutions.
  2. In the mixing bowl, add about half a cup of the vinegar and about 1 tablespoon of the salt. Add a sufficient amount of flour to it so as to obtain a paste of the three.
  3. Now, take the cloth (make sure that it is clean as presence of dirt on the cloth will make the lamp even dirtier) and dip it in the paste. Wipe the cloth over the lamp so that a thick film of the paste sticks to it. Keep the lamp aside for about ten minutes.
  4. Take a fresh cloth and wet it with water. Wipe the coating from the brass lamp with it so that it is completely removed. You may have to rinse this cloth quite a few number of times.
  5. Take a third clean cloth with a preferably softer texture to dry the lamp. Rub the lamp until it shines.
  6. Replace the bulb into the lamp and put it back into the holder.

Tips and warnings:

Before you start the process, wipe the lamp with a cloth to remove the dust from the surface. This will give you even better results.
