Leather is a very precious commodity, and so is any item that is made from it. Therefore, it should be cared for properly.

Stain Removal Tips

The instructions you would follow for removing leather stains depends on the kind of stain. You can follow whatever tips below that most suit you.

Remember each stain is different so it might require a different method. That is why more than one solution is shown below for your reference.

• Some minor stains can be rubbed out with a pencil. Another way to get rid of them is by dabbing the affected area with rubbing alcohol.
• Before cleaning a leather surface you should test the cleaning method in an inconspicuous area. This is to account for the differences in leather textures and grades.
• Many different types of leather coats will naturally repel water. However, sometimes leather can be stained by water, and a water stain can usually be removed with equal parts water and vinegar.
• When using a water-vinegar solution to remove a water stain you can dip a cloth in the solution and gently rub the water stain. This is one cleaning method that should be tested in an inconspicuous area, though.
• Wet leather coats that have just been cleaned should be hung in a well-ventilated area to dry. These clothing items should be hung in a well-ventilated area away from heat sources.
• If you want to ensure that your leather pieces, particularly your coats or jackets, dry right you should use padded hangers. It also is advised that you use garment bags to put your leather in while they dry so they do not get soiled again.
• Keep in mind when choosing a garment bag that the cotton ones allow room for air to escape. The plastic bags dry out and discolor the leather, and that is why the cotton ones are recommended over the plastic when it comes to cleaning leather at home.

Additional Advice

A ¼ cup of dish soap and 4 cups of warm water can really help put shine back into certain kinds of leather pieces. This solution along with a damp cloth can wipe away all dust and dirt that has been engrained into your prized coat, vest, or other inside or outside apparel.

After you have soaped up your leather jacket or coat (or other leather clothing item) you can then rinse it off with a damp sponge. When this step is completed you can then dry the jacket off with a towel.

If you after cleaning want to condition your coat you could also create a ¼ cup vinegar and ½ cup Neatsfoot or linseed oil mixture. This can be applied by dipping a lint-free cloth into this mixture and then spreading it evenly over your leather piece(s).
